Recently I was at Whole Foods and saw a terrarium that I wanted to purchase for my parents for Easter. When I went back two days later they were completely sold out, so I decided to make my own. Terrariums can make great centerpieces, look great on your bookcase or on your desk. They are perfect for people who don’t have a ‘green thumb’ because you only have to spritz them with a tiny amount of water once a month. The Whole Foods version sold for $20, and I was able to spend under $15 per display! While I am very pleased with how both of them turned out, I have to say that they are much harder to make than they look. Arranging tiny flowers in a small space is difficult, and making it look good is a whole other issue. Below are directions of how I made my terrariums. For care instructions check out ABOUT.COM.
Supplies Needed:
-A glass container {I used large mason jars}
-Small rocks
-Charcoal
-Dirt
-Small plants {I used succulents and cactus}
-Sheet moss
Directions
- Put down the rocks (for drainage} and sprinkle some charcoal on top.
- Put down 1-3 inches of dirt and then plant your plants.
- Cover the dirt with some moss and any decor that you would like! I used sea shells and a rusted penny for my decor.
- LIGHTLY water your plants and then you are done!

{I placed a sea shell on top of the moss for some added aesthetics}
